“Meshima, (Phellinus linteus) whose name literally means “Women’s Island,” is a mushroom that grows on mulberry trees on an island of the same name southwest of Japan. Meshima is becoming increasingly known for its remarkable women’s health benefits.* In groundbreaking studies, US researchers recently confirmed that an extract of Meshima mushrooms demonstrates potent activity in helping to maintain healthy breast cells.*” source: Mushroom Wisdom

This is an interesting interview for several reasons. I am learning along with you about this intriguing mushroom. Mark Kaylor is discussing Meshima mushroom. Like many mushrooms, Meshima has potent immune support with very specific areas of benefit. Meshima research is showing the specific extracts of Meshima are beneficial to female breast cells and tissue. There is a long history of use now combined with modern scientific research. See list below for some of these studies.

Look for companies that invest in the science to prove effectiveness and safety. This is an example of a particular company (Mushroom Wisdom), investing in research to discover if their products and extracts are effective. Find the companies that create AND research their ingredients. Mushroom Wisdom has been developing products and investing in the research for over 25 years. One of the primary goals of HealthQuestPodcast.com is to introduce you the best companies. We teach you how to make the distinctions that lead to better choices.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Many of these studies were done with extracts created by Mushroom Wisdom. Sometimes they tested various extracts to see if one is more effective. So the idea that all products are equal is false. Don’t accept products that are sold using borrowed (stolen?) science. If you want the results shown in studies, use the products and dosages used in the study.

Why Trust Mushroom Wisdom?

Beware of companies that make claims but cannot show that it is their product that has the science. The term is borrowed science. It is a problem for consumers and good companies when cheap companies make claims that are not true. Holding companies to a higher standard is the only way to assure that you will find the best products.

The Problem with Science
The problem isn’t with the science as much as it is a conflict with the law. The Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act of 1994 defines what supplement companies can and cannot say about their products. Companies are not allowed to discuss disease cure, treatment, mitigation or prevention. Companies are only allowed to make “structure/function” claims.

Personally I think we should always consider the structure/function benefits of nutrients. Nutrients don’t treat disease. They nourish the body. Drugs treat disease. Drugs are not nutrients. So even though nutrients show benefits in disease studies, that does not make them drugs. But it does make it hard to discuss the studies, because we are not used to understanding the actual mechanisms of action of natural compounds. Just because a natural compound may help the body restore does not make it a drug. Companies just must be careful about what they say and how they say it. And I must be careful as well. So when you hear us speak in careful terms, it is for good reason, and you have to learn to read between the lines, so to speak.

So on this page are three sources of content.

  • First is the content provided by Mushroom Wisdom. That text is quoted and attributed and Mushroom Wisdom is only responsible for that text.
  • Second are the scientific studies listed below. They speak for themselves. Many of these studies are done with Mushroom Wisdom extracts.
  • Third, everything else is mine. I put together the interview and write the podcast page. No one else is responsible for my words.

So when you evaluate content and claims as you research companies and products, try to figure out who is saying what. Then you have a better chance of evaluating what you hear and learn. This is a good example of the dilemma that faces consumers who want to know more and companies that would love to tell you more, being constrained by federal law. This leaves us all a little dissatisfied and unfulfilled. Hopefully, this is where HealthQuestPodcast.com can be one of your reliable resources.

The Emerging Science
PubMed is always a great place to begin your search for the science. PubMed is the government’s clearing house for clinical research. Using the search term “Phellinus linteus + cancer” I came up with 72 references. This fact alone tells you something. Companies do not continue to invest in research that does not show promise. It is research over time that reveals the benefits and modes of action. Here are a couple of examples of Meshima research and you can dig deeper if you wish.

Again, don’t listen to anyone who says natural products have no clinical evidence and/or who says natural products are not regulated. Such people are ill-informed.
