The Keto Diet has nutritional gaps that need to be addressed.
In this interview Dr. Audrey Ross discusses the Keto diet. The Keto diet is very popular and many people are losing weight. It is similar to the Atkins diet and both are considered low-carbohydrate diets. When carbohydrates arerestricted from the diet then so are the macro and micro nutrients that are supplied by those foods.
There are some significant nutritional challenges for those following the Keto Diet. A strict Keto Diet is not recommended as a long term strategy because of potential negative health consequences. Of course every long term dietary model should have better health as one of the main goals. So in order to lose weight and maintain a good nutritional balance while on Keto requires that we identify the nutritional challenges. Dr. Ross does that for us in this interview.
Dr. Ross emphasizes the importance of quality foods and nutrients avoiding poor quality protein and fats. Dr. Ross also stresses that low carbohydrate diets are low in necessary minerals and promote the loss of electrolytes which is why it’s important to consider nutritional supplements. She also describes why selecting the proper types of supplemental nutrients are important. County Life Vitamins has specific formulas that support the Keto diets*
What is the Keto Diet?
The Keto Diet is a very low carbohydrate high fat diet, similar to the Atkins Diet.
“This article is about low-carbohydrate dieting as a lifestyle choice or for weight loss. For information on low-carbohydrate dieting as a therapy for epilepsy, see Ketogenic diet.
Low-carbohydrate diets or carbohydrate-restricted diets (CRDs) are diets that restrict carbohydrate consumption relative to the average diet. Foods high in carbohydrates (e.g., sugar, bread, pasta) are limited, and replaced with foods containing a higher percentage of fat and protein (e.g., meat, poultry, fish, shellfish, eggs, cheese, nuts, and seeds), as well as low carbohydrate foods (e.g. spinach, kale, chard, collards, and other fibrous vegetables).
There is a lack of standardization of how much carbohydrate low-carbohydrate diets must have, and this has complicated research. One definition, from the American Academy of Family Physicians, specifies low-carbohydrate diets as having less than 20% carbohydrate content.
There is no good evidence that low-carbohydrate dieting confers any particular health benefits apart from weight loss, where low-carbohydrate diets achieve outcomes similar to other diets, as weight loss is mainly determined by calorie restriction and adherence.” Excerpt from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Science Disclaimer
There is another important consideration that exists with all nutritional products. It has everything to do with our discussions and how to stay on the legal side of FDA regulations. As you may well know, a company cannot make medical claims for supplements. This is a challenge when discussing the science of nutritional products.
There are hundreds of thousands of scientific studies on the benefits of different and unique nutritional products. The most important takeaway is that there are exciting benefits in these nutrients, enough to justify hundreds or thousands of studies. This gives us more confidence that the nutritional benefits are significant and worthy of further study. The existence of and discussion of studies does not constitute a medical claim.
The disclaimer is this: Nutrients are not drugs and drugs are not nutrients. Do not confuse the two. Drugs treat disease. Nutrients nourish the body. Nutrients are critical for good health. Let your doctor treat your disease, let nutrients be your foundation for health.
Exploring the Science
These are the results returned by Google Scholar in my recent search. This is an excellent resource for exploring the amount of science that exists. Use it whenever you want to see if something has been well-studied. Here are the search terms I used and the results and links.
- Low carbohydrate diet (all time) = 1,010,000 results
- Low carbohydrate (since 2019) = 16,200 results
- Low carbohydrate (since 2019) + protein= 16,100 results
- Low carbohydrate (since 2019) + vegetables = 11,200 results
- Low carbohydrate (since 2019) + minerals = 11,800 results
- Low carbohydrate (since 2019) + keto = 2,040 results
This is a significant amount of scientific inquiry. The body of scientific research provides a strong foundation for confidence. The more we know the better choices we will make. Better choices lead to better outcome.
